Kantara Castle is a medieval fortress on the Kyrenia mountain ridge in northeastern Cyprus, within Famagusta District, built to control inland approaches and coastal routes. The castle is notable for its elevated position and defensive works.
Remains of ramparts, towers and interior passageways are accessible along narrow paths; the site offers commanding views over the surrounding landscape and sea. Interpreted ruins allow visitors to trace medieval defensive arrangements and basic circulation routes through the castle.
Founded in the Byzantine period and expanded by subsequent medieval rulers, the castle was used to control mountain passes and to observe maritime traffic. It passed through Byzantine, Lusignan and later hands as part of long-standing strategic networks in Cyprus.
