Kangaroo Island
Island Island sanctuary known for abundant native wildlife
Kangaroo Island attracts wildlife watchers and coastal walkers to Flinders Chase National Park-home to Remarkable Rocks and Admirals Arch-plus sea lion colonies, koalas, and ferry connections from the mainland.
Kangaroo Island is a large island off the coast of South Australia noted for native wildlife, coastal scenery and protected natural areas. It is an important conservation and tourism destination for Australia’s southern coastline.
Key visitor draws include wildlife encounters with kangaroos, koalas and sea lions, scenic coastal features such as the Remarkable Rocks and Admirals Arch, and protected areas like Flinders Chase National Park. Seal Bay provides guided access to a breeding colony of Australian sea lions, and multiple short walks and lookouts present coastal and bushland landscapes.
European exploration reached the island in 1802 and it later supported sealing, agriculture and tourism development; conservation reserves were established through the 20th century to protect remaining native habitats and species. Today the island’s economy mixes conservation, tourism and primary production.
Kangaroo Island sits off the Fleurieu Peninsula in South Australia and is reached by ferry from Cape Jervis to Penneshaw or by air services; Kingscote is the island’s main town and service centre.
- Getting there: Ferries connect the island with the mainland at Penneshaw from Cape Jervis and vehicle hiring is commonly used to explore the island's roads and parks.
- Wildlife viewing: The island supports concentrated wildlife viewing - including koalas, kangaroos, echidnas and sea lions - with several conservation parks offering guided or regulated access.
What to See #
- Flinders Chase National Park: A large protected area at the island's western end that includes coastal cliffs, native bushland and wildlife habitats and contains the Remarkable Rocks and Admirals Arch.
- Seal Bay Conservation Park: A sandy beach and protected area with a boardwalk through the colony where Australian sea lions can be observed at close range under guided conditions.
- Kingscote: The island's main commercial centre and administrative town, which serves as a base for accommodation and services.
- Penneshaw: The ferry terminal on the island's east coast where services from the mainland arrive and depart.
- Remarkable Rocks: A set of weathered granite outcrops perched on a headland that are a well-known geological formation and photo spot.
- Admirals Arch: A natural sea arch formed in coastal cliffs that is a regular sea-bird and marine viewing area.
How to Get to Kangaroo Island #
From Adelaide drive about 100-115 km south to Cape Jervis (roughly 1.5-2.5 hours depending on route), then take the vehicle/passenger ferry (SeaLink) across to Penneshaw on Kangaroo Island (ferry ~45 minutes). Alternatively, regular regional flights operate from Adelaide to Kingscote Airport on Kangaroo Island. Once on the island most visitors use a car; distances between settlements on KI are typically tens of kilometres.
Tips for Visiting Kangaroo Island #
- Book the SeaLink ferry from Cape Jervis to Penneshaw in advance and allow time for vehicle loading - ferry timetables and capacity make reservations wise, especially in peak season.
- Plan at least one night on the island rather than a same-day return trip from Adelaide: many wildlife experiences (dusk/dawn seal and kangaroo viewing) and attractions such as Flinders Chase National Park are easier with an overnight stay.
- For wildlife, join a guided Seal Bay or island wildlife tour (these operate from the official conservation parks) and arrive early at major sites like Remarkable Rocks and Admirals Arch to beat the mid-day coach crowds.
Best Time to Visit Kangaroo Island #
Best in spring or autumn for mild weather, abundant wildlife activity and fewer crowds.
