Archaeological Site Ancient Greek archaeological site on Sicilian coast
On southern Sicily’s coast, ancient Kamarina offers archaeological ruins from a Greek city, low stone walls and a museum, paired with nearby beaches and the agricultural landscape of Ragusa province.
Kamarina is an ancient Greek archaeological site on the southern coast of Sicily within the region of Sicily, Italy. It was established in the archaic period as a Greek colony and today is noted for its archaeological remains.
The site preserves sections of defensive walls, foundations of temples and parts of the urban layout that illustrate Greek colonial town planning. The visible ruins include public buildings and traces of later Roman occupation layers.
Kamarina was founded in 599 BC by colonists from Syracuse and experienced the typical cycles of prosperity, conflict and reorganization common to Sicilian Greek cities. Over centuries the settlement was abandoned and later became an archaeological site studied and excavated by modern researchers.
The ruins lie on the southern Sicilian coast and are accessible from nearby modern towns in the Ragusa province area; the surrounding landscape is coastal lowland that supported the ancient city’s maritime connections.
