How to Get to Kaluga

Kaluga is reachable by its small regional airport (Grabtsevo, KLF) and by frequent road and rail links from Moscow. The city's main railway stops are Kaluga‑1 and Kaluga‑2; many travellers fly into Moscow and complete the trip by train or intercity bus.

By Air

Grabtsevo (KLF): Grabtsevo is Kaluga’s local airport, about 8-10 km north of the city centre. From the terminal you can take a taxi to the centre in roughly 15-25 minutes; expect about 300-700 ₽ depending on the operator and time of day. There are occasional shared shuttle minibuses (marshrutka) linking the airport with central stops-these are cheaper (around 100-200 ₽) but run irregularly, so check schedules in advance.

Vnukovo (VKO) / Domodedovo (DME) / Sheremetyevo (SVO): Most international and many domestic flights arrive to Moscow’s airports; travellers usually transfer to Kaluga from Moscow by train or intercity bus. From Vnukovo you can take Aeroexpress or a bus into Moscow (Aeroexpress ~35-40 min, ~500 ₽) and then onward bus or train to Kaluga (see Train & Bus card). From Domodedovo and Sheremetyevo allow extra time (1-1.5+ hours) to reach a Moscow rail/bus station before continuing; combined door-to-door travel from any Moscow airport to Kaluga is typically 2.5-4.5 hours and will cost roughly 700-1,500 ₽ depending on mode and connections.

By Train & Bus

Train: Kaluga is served by Kaluga-1 (Калуга-1) and Kaluga-2 railway stations for regional and long-distance services. Direct trains from Moscow to Kaluga (often listed as Moscow → Kaluga / Kaluga-1) take roughly 2-3 hours depending on the service; second-class and reserved-seat tickets typically range from about 300-1,000 ₽. Suburban elektrichka services operate on some routes but schedules are less frequent than buses-check Russian Railways (RZD) for up-to-date times and fares.

Bus: Regular intercity buses run between Moscow and Kaluga from Moscow coach stations and major interchanges; journey time is typically 2-3 hours depending on traffic. Fares are commonly in the 350-800 ₽ range for standard express buses; minibuses (marshrutkas) are slightly cheaper but less comfortable. Within Kaluga there is a city bus and trolleybus network for short trips (see Getting Around).

How to Get Around Kaluga

Getting around Kaluga is straightforward using the city's buses, trolleybuses and plentiful taxis; marshrutkas fill in where scheduled services are thin. For most visitors, a combination of walking in the centre and taxis for off‑centre sites offers the best balance of speed and convenience.
