Kalmar Castle
Castle Renaissance-era coastal fortress and historical royal residence
A well-preserved waterfront Renaissance fortress in Kalmar, Kalmar Castle presents museum rooms, battlements and exhibits on Sweden’s past; visitors join guided tours and stroll the harbourfront.
Kalmar Castle is a waterfront fortress in the city of Kalmar on Sweden’s southeast coast, with origins as a medieval stronghold and a prominent Renaissance rebuilding. Parts of the existing structure date from the 16th century after major reconstruction to create the present castle silhouette.
Visitors can see restored state rooms, exhibition galleries and the inner courtyard, along with visible defensive walls and a surrounding moat. The castle interprets its role in regional politics and royal residence functions and hosts rotating exhibitions and events.
Kalmar Castle’s site has been fortified since the medieval period and was an important royal and military centre in Östra Gf6taland; the castle underwent major renovations in the 1500s that produced its recognizable Renaissance character.
The castle stands on the waterfront at Kalmar on the Baltic coast, directly opposite the island of Öland and connected by road and the nearby Öland Bridge.
- Best viewpoints: The castle is located beside Kalmar's harbour and the nearby Öland Bridge, making courtyard views and waterfront approaches particularly photogenic.
What to See #
- Keep and courtyard: The keep and inner courtyard - the castle's central Renaissance structures, with restored state rooms and exhibition spaces.
- Fortifications: Surrounding fortifications and moat - visible defensive works that remain part of the castle's 16th and 17th century fabric.

Tips for Visiting Kalmar Castle #
- Arrive early in the day before coach tours fill the site; the castle sits right by Kalmar city centre so combine a morning visit with a short walk from the train station.
