Kaleiçi
Area Historic old town in Istanbul with Ottoman architecture
Historic district in Turkey’s urban fabric with narrow streets, Ottoman‑era houses, mosques and local shops; frequented for architecture, cafés and city strolls.
Kaleiçi is the historic walled old town at the core of Antalya on Turkey’s Mediterranean coast. It contains Roman, Seljuk and Ottoman-era monuments, including a Roman triumphal arch dating to 130 AD.
The district features a compact maze of narrow streets with restored Ottoman-era houses, small hotels, shops and cafes spread across a few square kilometers. Key sights include the Roman-era Hadrian’s Gate, the 13th-century Yivli Minare and the seaside Old Harbor, which provides a waterfront promenade and boat access.
Architectural highlights and small museums are concentrated within the surviving city walls, making the area walkable and easy to cover on foot in a single day. The harbor area offers views across the Mediterranean and is a popular spot for evening walks.
The area originated as the Roman-era core of Antalya and retains portions of the ancient city walls and gates. Successive periods of Seljuk and Ottoman rule reshaped the urban fabric, producing the timber-frame houses and narrow lanes visible today.
Kaleiçi sits in central Antalya on Turkey’s southwestern Mediterranean coast, adjacent to the modern city center and the city’s main harbor.
- Best views: Best vantage points for photographing the old town and coastline are the harbor promenade and the tops of the narrow lanes above the city walls at sunset.
- Accessibility note: Much of the district sits within the surviving stretches of ancient city walls, so expect uneven paving and steps on many streets.
