Kalambo structure

The Kalambo structure refers to archaeological remains at the Kalambo Falls locality on the Kalambo River in Zambia’s Northern Province, near the border with Tanzania. The site is notable for a multi-layered record of human activity and well-preserved deposits across a long timespan.

Excavations have revealed stone tools, faunal remains and structural elements in stratified contexts that span Late Pleistocene and Holocene periods, making the site important for understanding prehistoric lifeways in the region. More recent work has documented organic remains that contribute to reconstruction of environment and technology through time.

Archaeological investigations at Kalambo have occurred intermittently since the mid-20th century, with successive teams recording and re-excavating portions of the site to refine dating and interpretation. The site’s proximity to Kalambo Falls - a persistent water source - is central to its long record of human use.

The archaeological locality sits beside the Kalambo River and falls in northern Zambia close to the international boundary with Tanzania; the area is remote and access typically requires regional transport to nearby towns followed by local roads.
