Kajmakcalan (Kaimaktsalan) is a high Balkan peak with WWI battlefield memorials and a ski area; hikers and history buffs visit for alpine trails, mountain panoramas and wartime monuments.
Kajmakčalan, also spelled Kaimaktsalan, is a peak in the Voras (Nidže) mountain range on the border between northern Greece and what is now North Macedonia. The summit rises to about 2520 m and is a dominant high point in the range.
Alpine walking routes access the summit ridge and offer wide views over the surrounding mountains; the Greek side supports a seasonal ski area that serves winter visitors. A preserved military cemetery and memorial near the top mark the site of intense fighting during World War I and attract visitors interested in battlefield history.
The mountain gained prominence from its role in early 20th century military operations and afterwards as a destination for mountaineers and skiers. Postwar developments on the Greek side established access roads and ski facilities that remain the main visitor infrastructure.
Kajmakčalan lies on the border ridge between northern Greece and North Macedonia in the central Balkans. The mountain sits among high alpine terrain and is one of the more accessible high peaks in the Voras range from the Greek lowlands.
