Kainji Lake

Kainji Lake is a large reservoir on the Niger River in north-central Nigeria formed when the river was impounded by Kainji Dam. The lake extends along the river channel and created a shoreline with islands and bays used for fishing, transport and wildlife habitat.

The reservoir was formed during the construction of the dam project in the 1960s to provide hydroelectric power and regulate river flow; it is paired with a hydroelectric installation at the dam site. The shoreline and islands are associated with a protected area and national park that conserves terrestrial and aquatic habitats and supports seasonal bird populations.
