The Kadisha Valley (also Qadisha or Wadi Qadisha) is a steep, wooded gorge in northern Lebanon noted for its long history of Christian monastic settlement and hermitages. It is recognized as a cultural landscape and was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1998.
Monastic complexes, rock-cut chapels and cave dwellings occupy the valley and its cliff faces, used over many centuries by ascetics and monastic communities. Key features include cliffside hermitages, medieval monasteries and narrow trails that link scattered religious sites across the gorge.
The valley has been a refuge and religious centre for Maronite Christians and other communities from late antiquity through the medieval period, with many monasteries expanded or rebuilt in the Middle Ages. The area preserves layers of religious occupation and continues to host active monastic houses.
The Kadisha Valley lies in the Mount Lebanon range in the North Governorate, around the town of Bsharri, with steep slopes dropping toward the coastal plain to the west. The surrounding landscape combines forested slopes and rocky cliffs.

How to Get to Kadisha Valley #
The Kadisha (Qadisha) Valley is accessed principally via the mountain town of Bsharri/Bcharre in Lebanon’s North Governorate. From Bcharre there are local roads and marked hiking trails down into the valley and to monastic sites such as Qannubin; many visitors park in Bcharre and walk or take short local drives to trailheads. Bcharre is the usual base for visits into the valley-use regional roads into the mountain rather than attempting to reach the valley by any single major highway.

- Access the valley from Bsharri (Bcharre) or the Cedars of God area and start early in the day to make the most of cooler temperatures and clearer light for valley viewpoints.
- Hire a local guide for multi-day walks or to reach the remote monasteries and cliffside hermitages-many of the historic monastic sites require route knowledge and are best visited with a guide.
- Combine your visit with the nearby Gibran Museum in Bsharri to add cultural context; approach routes into narrow mountain roads cautiously and allow extra time for slow driving and photo stops.
