Kadifekale
Ruins Ancient hilltop castle overlooking İzmir bay
A hilltop citadel above İzmir, Kadifekale contains Hellenistic and later masonry that overlooks the bay; visitors walk the ruins for harbour views and to explore adjacent historic neighbourhoods.
Kadifekale, often called the Velvet Castle, is a historic hilltop fortification on Pagos Hill overlooking the city of İzmir and its gulf. The site preserves ancient and later masonry and dominates the city skyline.
The hill and its fortifications have origins in the Hellenistic period and are traditionally linked to early successors of Alexander the Great; the citadel was reused and rebuilt in Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman periods, producing the layered ruins visible today.
Perched above central İzmir in the city’s Bornova/Kadifekale quarter, the site overlooks the Gulf of İzmir and sits within the urban fabric a short drive from the historic waterfront and central districts.
- Ancient origins: Also known as the Velvet Castle, it stands on Pagos Hill and is traditionally associated with Hellenistic foundations by Lysimachus in the early Hellenistic period.
- Viewpoint: Provides extensive views over the Gulf of İzmir and the urban area below, making it a popular viewpoint in the city.
What to See #
- Citadel and ramparts: The hilltop citadel with remnants of ancient and medieval walls that occupy a commanding position above the city of İzmir and the Gulf.
- Cisterns and foundations: A system of ancient cisterns and foundations on the hill slope, evidence of the site's long occupation beneath the visible ruins.
