Kadesh is an ancient Near Eastern city located on the Orontes River plain in what is now western Syria and is notable as the site of a major Late Bronze Age battle. The city and its environs were strategically important in the campaigns between Egypt and the Hittite empire.
Kadesh was a significant city-state during the second millennium BCE and became the focus of a major recorded engagement when Ramesses II met the Hittite king in battle c. 1274 BCE. The confrontation is one of the best-documented battles of the ancient world and is recorded in multiple Egyptian inscriptions and reliefs.
The site lies in the Orontes river region of Homs Governorate in western Syria, positioned on the plains that historically connected inland Syria with the eastern Mediterranean coast.
