Kabru is a mountain massif in the eastern Himalaya on the border region between Sikkim in India and Nepal, forming part of the greater Kangchenjunga massif. It includes several high summits and glaciated ridges that are part of the high-altitude Himalayan chain.

Mountaineers visit the Kabru area as part of expeditions in the Kangchenjunga region; the massif is notable for its complex of peaks rather than a single isolated summit. Terrain includes steep faces and glaciers, and approaches involve high mountain routes typical of the eastern Himalaya.

The peaks of Kabru were first visited by mountaineers during the early 20th century when European exploratory climbs began in the region, and the area has since been part of ongoing Himalayan climbing activity. Access and climbing routes connect with approaches used for other Kangchenjunga-area expeditions.

Geographically Kabru sits on the India-Nepal border within the eastern Himalayan range, in the broader administrative region of Sikkim on the Indian side and Taplejung district on the Nepali side.

  • Range and border: Part of the Kangchenjunga region on the border between Sikkim (India) and Nepal, it comprises multiple summits and glaciated ridges used by alpine climbers.

Tips for Visiting Kabru #

  • Plan climbs or treks in the pre- and post-monsoon windows (May-June or September-October) when weather is most stable for the Kabru/Kanchenjunga area.
  • Treat Kabru as a technical Himalayan objective-summit attempts require serious high‑altitude mountaineering experience and formal permits; coordinate with the Indian Mountaineering Foundation and local authorities.
  • Non‑climbers can get excellent views of Kabru from the Goecha La trek-arrange guides and route permits through established trek operators based in Yuksom or nearby towns.

For clear conditions and safer trekking around Kabru, aim for pre-monsoon (Apr-Jun) or post-monsoon (Sep-Nov).

Pre-monsoon trekking season
April-June · 5-20°C (varies with elevation)
Generally clear weather and good visibility for high-altitude routes; warm in lower valleys and cool to cold as altitude increases.
Post-monsoon/clear skies
September-November · 5-18°C (varies with elevation)
Stable weather and good visibility after the monsoon-popular for trekking and mountain views; nights and higher campsites can be cold.
Monsoon and winter
July-August (monsoon), December-March (winter) · monsoon: heavy rain; winter: −10-10°C (higher cold)
Monsoon brings heavy rain and slippery trails; winter brings snow and very cold conditions at higher elevations-limits access and increases avalanche risk.
