Difficulty: High-altitude glacier travel on the Baltoro Glacier with long days over moraine and boulder fields, crevasse and rockfall risk, rapidly changing weather and limited rescue options.

Baltoro Glacier carves a deep corridor through the central Karakoram, surrounded by jagged granite spires and enormous icefalls. The walk is largely on moraine, ice and braided glacial streams, passing remote Balti villages, shepherd camps and increasingly wild, high mountain scenery as you gain elevation.

Concordia is the great glacial confluence where the giants cluster and offers sustained, close views of K2 and nearby high peaks; most evenings are spent in tents at well-spaced camps run by trekking crews, not in mountain huts. The route is notable for its solitude, scale and direct proximity to some of the worlds highest mountains.

Skardu is the usual gateway for the Baltoro region; it has a small seasonal airport and is linked by road to Islamabad via a long drive or bus. From Skardu trekkers take a jeep ride to Askole, the last village with motor access, where the walk formally begins.

Most parties walk from Askole up-valley to Concordia and K2 Base Camp then return the same route; logistics are typically arranged to shuttle equipment and staff by vehicle to the trailhead.

The walkable season is mainly June to early September. Outside this window heavy snow, unstable glacier conditions and extreme cold make the route unsafe and many services are unavailable.

Book permits and a reputable local operator well in advance during the season; expect late-summer conditions of intense sun, strong winds and sudden storms, plus persistent crevasse and serac hazards while on glacier sections.
