Jvari
Religious Site Early medieval hilltop monastery overlooking Mtskheta and Aragvi
A 6th‑century monastery above Mtskheta, Jvari sits at the confluence of the Aragvi and Mtkvari rivers; pilgrims and visitors come for the compact cross‑domed church and sweeping views of Georgia’s ancient capital.
Jvari is a small, early medieval monastery perched on a rocky hill overlooking the confluence of the Mtkvari (Kura) and Aragvi rivers near the town of Mtskheta in Georgia. It is an outstanding example of early Georgian church architecture dating to the early medieval period.
The complex is compact and notable for its cruciform plan and simple, powerful massing that sits prominently on the ridge top. Visitors often combine a visit to Jvari with the nearby historic centre of Mtskheta.
The monastery was constructed in the early medieval era on a site that had been a Christian pilgrimage location since the early centuries AD, and it became part of the ensemble recognised by UNESCO for its historic monuments of Mtskheta. It has been preserved as an important religious and architectural landmark.
Jvari sits on a volcanic hill a short distance above the town of Mtskheta, which is approximately 20 kilometres north of Tbilisi, the capital of Georgia.
