Jungfrau
Mountain Iconic Alpine peak overlooking Bernese Oberland and glaciers
In the Bernese Alps, Jungfrau attracts visitors via the Jungfraujoch railway for alpine hiking, ski terrain, glacial views and classic mountain villages such as Lauterbrunnen.
The Jungfrau is a prominent 4,158-metre peak in the Bernese Alps of Switzerland, forming part of the famous Eiger-Mönch-Jungfrau trio. It is a central feature of a high-Alpine landscape recognised for its glaciers and mountain scenery.
The Jungfraujoch saddle and its railway station at about 3,454 metres are among the most visited high-Alpine attractions in Europe, offering glacier views, an ice palace and scientific facilities. Major viewpoints and access points include Kleine Scheidegg and the resorts of Grindelwald and Lauterbrunnen, which serve as bases for hikes, climbs and seasonal skiing.
The region’s mountain railways and cable cars were constructed in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, with the Jungfraubahn reaching the Jungfraujoch in 1912. That infrastructure transformed access from multi-day mountaineering approaches to day-trip tourism and alpine research.
The mountain sits in the canton of Bern in central Switzerland, in the Bernese Oberland. Valleys to the north and south connect to village centres such as Grindelwald and Lauterbrunnen; the nearest major Swiss city is Bern, about 60 to 100 kilometres away depending on route.
- UNESCO listing: A UNESCO World Heritage area includes the Jungfrau region together with Aletsch Glacier, noted for its high-Alpine landscape and glacial features.
- Access tip: Rail access to Jungfraujoch provides one of the highest permanently accessible rail destinations in Europe and can be busy in summer; book ahead during peak season.
What to See #
- Jungfraujoch: The high Alpine saddle known as the Jungfraujoch sits at about 3,454 metres and is the terminus of the railway tunnel that carries passengers to "Top of Europe" facilities and glacier views.
