Judiciary Square

Judiciary Square is a public square and neighbourhood in northwest Washington, D.C., noted for its concentration of courthouses and legal offices. The area functions as one of the city’s principal judicial precincts.

The site is dominated by government and court buildings that face a small formal park; many visitors come to view the architecture of courthouse buildings and public memorials. The area is also a practical transit hub with the Judiciary Square Metro station providing direct access on the Red Line.

The neighbourhood developed in the 19th and 20th centuries as the city’s legal district, with successive courthouse buildings and civic structures added over time. Its name reflects the long-standing presence of judicial institutions clustered around the central park.

The square sits in Northwest Washington, D.C., a short walk north of the National Mall and within the federal downtown area. It is easily reached by Red Line Metro and by multiple city bus routes.
