Judenplatz

Judenplatz is a public square in Vienna’s historic Innere Stadt that marks the former medieval Jewish quarter and serves as a site of remembrance. It is notable for its archaeological remains and a major Holocaust memorial.

The square features the Nameless Library memorial by Rachel Whiteread, unveiled in 2000, and an adjacent archaeological display showing foundations and remains associated with the medieval synagogue and Jewish community. Interpretive panels and a small visitor area explain the historical significance and discoveries.

Judenplatz is also surrounded by civic buildings and cafés and is used for commemorative events and educational visits related to Vienna’s Jewish history. The compact square invites short visits combined with walking tours of the historic center.

Judenplatz sits at the heart of Vienna’s medieval Jewish neighborhood and has been the site of archaeological excavations revealing structural remains of synagogues and community buildings. The modern memorial and interpretive installations were added to acknowledge that history and commemorate Holocaust victims.
