Juan de Fuca Provincial Park
Park Coastal BC park with beaches and rainforest trails
Rugged shoreline, exposed beaches and rainforest trails define Juan de Fuca Provincial Park on Vancouver Island’s west coast. Hikers tackle sections of the Juan de Fuca Marine Trail; tidepooling, surf-swept camping and observing coastal wildlife draw outdoor visitors.
Juan de Fuca Provincial Park protects a rugged stretch of coastline on the southwest side of Vancouver Island and the shoreline along the Strait of Juan de Fuca. The park is known for coastal rainforest, exposed headlands, beaches and backcountry hiking opportunities.
The park’s most prominent feature is the long coastal route that follows beaches, sea cliffs and headlands and links a chain of campsites and trail access points; the route is used by multi-day hikers and day visitors to surf, explore tide pools and camp. Shorter day walks and shoreline access points are also popular for wildlife viewing and beachcombing.
The park was created and is managed by British Columbia Parks to protect the marine-adjacent coastal environment and provide managed backcountry recreation. Over time trail conservation and campsite management have been the focus to limit erosion and maintain access.
The park lies on the southwest coast of Vancouver Island, with trailheads and access points between the communities of Jordan River, Sooke and Port Renfrew, and faces the Strait of Juan de Fuca.
- Marine trail length: The main coastal trail through the park runs about 47 kilometres and is typically hiked as a multi-day backcountry route with designated campsites and water cautions.
- Best time to hike: Peak season for safe hiking and drier weather is generally July through September; expect wet conditions and muddy sections outside summer months.
