Jotapata
National Park Ancient hilltop fortress and historic battle site
Jotapata (Yodfat), an ancient fortified hill in Galilee, is the site of first-century CE siege narratives recorded by Josephus. Visitors explore archaeological ruins and hilltop views tracing Roman-era history near modern-day Safed.
Jotapata is the site of an ancient fortified Jewish town in Israel’s Upper Galilee, noted for its role in the First Jewish
Roman War. The settlement is known primarily as the place besieged and captured in 67 CE, an event recorded by the historian Flavius Josephus.
The town was occupied in antiquity and became a focal point in the First Jewish
Roman War when Roman forces besieged it in 67 CE; Josephus Flavius, who commanded Jewish forces there, later wrote a first-person account of the siege. After its capture the settlement was destroyed in the course of the war and later abandoned as a major urban site.
Located in Israel’s Northern District in the Upper Galilee, the site sits on a prominent hill above nearby valleys. It is within the Galilean highlands and is reached by local roads from regional towns.
