John Rylands Research Institute and Library is a historic neo-Gothic library and research institution on Deansgate in Manchester. Founded in memory of John Rylands, the building opened to the public around 1900 and is noted for its architecture and rare-book collections.

The interior contains a vaulted reading room and a range of special collections that include medieval manuscripts, early printed books and papyri. The library serves both as a public heritage site and as an active research library for scholars.

Originally established by Enriqueta Rylands, the library later became integrated with the University of Manchester and now operates as part of the university’s library and research services. Conservation and digitisation of its collections are ongoing priorities.

The library sits on Deansgate in central Manchester, opposite busy city-centre streets and within walking distance of other university and cultural institutions.

  • Notable holdings: Houses internationally important items including a Gutenberg Bible and the early New Testament papyrus P52, which are part of the library's special collections.

What to See #

  • Historic reading room: The library's main historic reading room and nave are a single, dramatic Victorian neo-Gothic space with carved stonework, wood fittings and stained glass that house the library's open collections.
  • Special collections: The Special Collections hold rare books, manuscripts and papyri including a copy of the Gutenberg Bible and early New Testament fragments such as the St John papyrus known as P52.
