Jōetsu is best reached by rail: the Hokuriku Shinkansen serves Jōetsu-Myōkō Station, giving fast access from Tokyo and Kanazawa. Air travelers typically use Niigata Airport (connections to Niigata Station) or fly into Tokyo and continue by shinkansen or highway bus.

Niigata Airport (KIJ): Niigata Airport is the closest airport serving Niigata Prefecture with frequent flights to/from Tokyo Haneda. From Niigata Airport take the airport limousine bus to Niigata Station (approx. 25-35 min, ≈¥640) then change to JR services or Echigo Tokimeki Railway toward Joetsu (see train card). Tokyo (Haneda HND / Narita NRT): If you fly into Tokyo, the usual route is to transfer to Tokyo Station (Haneda by monorail+JR or Keikyu+JR, Narita by Narita Express or Keisei+JR) and then take the Hokuriku Shinkansen to Jōetsu-Myōkō Station.
