Jizera Mountains
Mountains Forest-covered mountain range on Czech-Polish border
Bordering Poland in north Bohemia, the Jizera Mountains offer rounded granite peaks, peat bogs and an extensive network of hiking and cross-country ski trails. Visitors also explore glassmaking towns like Harrachov.
The Jizera Mountains (Jizerské hory) are a compact mountain range in the northern Czech Republic on the border with Poland, located close to the city of Liberec. Peaks on the Czech side reach just over 1,100 metres, with forested slopes and upland bogs.
Trail networks and downhill and cross-country skiing facilities make the range a regional outdoor-recreation destination in both summer and winter. The landscape is dominated by coniferous forest, granite formations and peat bogs that are often visited by hikers and naturalists.
Geologically and ecologically the range has long been used for forestry and outdoor tourism; local towns historically supported mountain industries such as glassmaking. Modern infrastructure supports winter sports resorts and maintained trail systems.
The Jizera Mountains lie in the Liberec Region of the Czech Republic, running along the Czech-Polish border and forming part of the northern foothills of the broader Sudeten massif.
- Accessibility: The range forms part of the border region between the Czech Republic and Poland and lies near the city of Liberec, making it easily accessible for day trips.
- Landscape features: The mountains are characterised by extensive coniferous forest, granite outcrops and some raised peat bogs that are ecologically significant.
What to See #
- Smrk (highest peak): Smrk is the highest peak on the Czech side at 1,124 metres and is a common target for hikers and local ski routes.
- Trail network: The Jizerská magistrála is a long, waymarked network of cross-country ski and hiking trails that traverses the range and is used year-round for outdoor recreation.
How to Get to Jizera Mountains #

By car use regional roads from Liberec or from the D10 corridor out of Prague to the foothill towns; from those towns local roads lead into trailheads and ski or hiking areas.
Public transport: regional trains and buses serve towns on the mountain edges (for example Tanvald or Harrachov); from these towns you can join marked hiking trails or local buses to reach specific parts of the mountain range.
