Jiuzhaigou
National Park Mountain valley park with colorful lakes and waterfalls
Jiuzhaigou Valley in Sichuan is a nature reserve of multicolored lakes, cascading waterfalls and alpine meadows; tourists hike boardwalks, photograph water pools and visit Tibetan villages to combine scenery with local culture.
Jiuzhaigou Valley is a protected nature reserve and national park in northern Sichuan province known for its range of travertine pools, layered waterfalls and colourful alpine lakes. The site is noted for its strikingly clear and multicoloured lakes set in forested mountain valleys and is a UNESCO World Heritage natural site.
The park consists of several parallel valleys-Shuzheng, Rize and Zechawa-linked by trails and shuttle buses, with many boardwalks and overlooks providing access to famous features such as Five-Flower Lake and numerous cascading falls. Visitors walk prepared trails and use shuttle services to move between valley viewpoints.
The valley system formed through karst and glacial processes that created travertine dams and terraces; ecological management and visitor controls have been implemented to protect the fragile pools and surrounding forest. The reserve has also been affected by earthquakes in the past decade and management plans adapt access and conservation accordingly.
Jiuzhaigou lies in northwestern Sichuan province in a high mountain region; the reserve’s elevation ranges broadly with valleys typically around 2,000 to 3,000 metres above sea level, and the nearest county town is Jiuzhaigou or Songpan, served by regional roads and a small airport.
- Best season: Autumn foliage usually produces the most dramatic colours in the lakes and forests; many visitors aim for September to November for peak colour.
- On-site transport: Access within the reserve is managed by shuttle buses and boardwalks to protect sensitive travertine terraces; guided or timed entry is commonly used.
What to See #
- Shuzheng Valley: One of the three main valleys in the reserve, containing a chain of travertine pools and several scenic boardwalks that pass by multicoloured lakes.
- Rize Valley: A central valley with dense concentrations of colorful travertine lakes and falls, including some of the most photographed pools in the park.
- Zechawa Valley: A quieter valley with woodland and travertine terraces linking several waterfalls and scenic pools along wooded trails.
- Five-Flower Lake: A shallow, vividly coloured travertine lake noted for layered hues and clarity; it is one of the reserve's most photographed spots.

Most visitors fly into Jiuzhai Huanglong Airport (the nearest airport) and then take a shuttle bus, tourist coach or taxi to Jiuzhaigou Valley (typically about a 1-1.5 hour drive). There are also long-distance buses from Chengdu that take many hours if you prefer overland travel.
Tips for Visiting Jiuzhaigou #
- Book park entry and internal shuttle-bus tickets in advance and aim for an early entry time-the park operates mandatory electric shuttle buses and these fill early in the day, especially during peak season.
- Target quieter seasons (late spring or autumn) and start at Nuorilang or long-lake areas at opening; the major sights get most crowded mid‑day when multiple shuttle buses converge.
- Consider staying in the valley or nearby Songpan overnight so you can start on the first shuttle and avoid the bulk of day visitors who arrive on organized tours.
