Jiroft culture

The Jiroft culture refers to an archaeological complex identified in Kerman province in southeastern Iran, recognised for richly decorated artifacts and urban mounds. It is associated with early Bronze Age societies in the Halil River area.

Key finds linked to the Jiroft archaeological horizon include elaborately carved chlorite vessels, seals and other grave goods that suggest complex local craft traditions. Major excavation work at nearby mounds, notably Konar Sandal, began in the early 2000s and brought widespread attention to the region’s material assemblage.

Archaeologists date the cultural horizon to the third and early second millennia BCE when dense settlement and public architecture developed along the Halil River. Interpretations vary about the political scope of the culture, but the finds indicate significant local craft production and long-distance contacts.
