Jin Mao Tower
Building Shanghai skyscraper featuring observation deck and hotel
Jin Mao Tower in Shanghai’s Pudong skyline contains an observation deck and high-rise hotel; tourists visit for city views, architectural scale and easy access to the Bund, Shanghai Tower and Oriental Pearl nearby.
Jin Mao Tower is a 421-meter, 88-storey skyscraper in the Lujiazui financial district of Pudong, Shanghai, completed in 1999. It is one of the city’s early supertall mixed-use towers and a prominent element of Shanghai’s modern skyline.
Publicly accessible highlights include a high-level observation area providing panoramic views across the Huangpu River to the Bund and across Pudong, plus a large multi-storey hotel and lobby spaces inside the building. The tower contains office floors and hospitality spaces across its 88 storeys and is adjacent to the Shanghai World Financial Center and Shanghai Tower.
Designed by the firm Skidmore, Owings & Merrill and led by architect Adrian Smith, construction took place through the 1990s and the building opened in 1999 as a mixed office and hotel tower. Its tiered, pagoda-like form references traditional Chinese architecture while using late 20th century structural engineering for high-rise seismic and wind performance.
The tower sits on the east bank of the Huangpu River in Pudong, directly across from the Bund and within the Lujiazui cluster of financial skyscrapers. It is within walking distance of metro stations serving Lujiazui and is a short drive from central Shanghai.
