Park Royal deer park north of Copenhagen with ancient oaks
Just north of Copenhagen, Jægersborg Dyrehave is a centuries-old deer park with large stands of oak and beech and freely roaming red deer-popular for walking, cycling and picnics in expansive, unmanaged woodland.
Jægersborg Dyrehave is a large historic deer park north of Copenhagen near Klampenborg that originated as a royal hunting ground. It is notable for its free-roaming deer herds and for the designed hunting landscape that dates to the 17th and 18th centuries.
The area was laid out and managed as a royal hunting landscape from the late 17th century onward, with roadways and clearings designed for mounted par force hunting. Over time the royal hunting functions ceased and the land became a public recreational park while retaining the historic layout and surviving structures.
The park lies at Klampenborg, north of central Copenhagen in the Capital Region of Denmark, bordering coastal areas and neighbouring public attractions such as local leisure sites. It is accessible by regional transport from Copenhagen and sits within a largely lowland-forest and meadow setting.
- UNESCO listing: Part of the Par Force Hunting Landscape in North Zealand, a UNESCO World Heritage property recognising the 17th- and 18th-century designed hunting grounds and road geometry.
- Visitor tip: Best wildlife viewing is early morning or late afternoon when deer are most active; wear sturdy footwear for unpaved tracks and expect uneven terrain in places.
What to See #
- Hermitage (Eremitageslottet): An 18th-century royal shooting lodge set within the park that was used during the era of mounted par force hunts and remains a prominent historic building in the landscape.
- Hunting landscape and rides: Wide open parkland and marked rides laid out for par force hunting that form a recognisable geometric pattern in parts of the forest; these layouts are part of the area's cultural-historical significance.
