Jezreel Valley

Jezreel Valley is a broad fertile plain in northern Israel within the Northern District, known for intensive agriculture and several important archaeological sites. It has been a key corridor and settlement area since ancient times.

The valley contains low hills, cultivated fields, and scattered towns; notable visitor highlights include the archaeological mound Tel Megiddo and local market towns. The landscape is largely agricultural, with visible irrigation and field patterns that extend for many kilometres across the plain.

The area has been inhabited since the Bronze and Iron Ages and appears repeatedly in historical and biblical sources; successive cultures built and reoccupied settlements here over millennia. The plain has also been the scene of military campaigns and changing borders through history.

Geographically it sits in Israel’s Northern District, roughly between the inland hill country and the coastal plain, with towns such as Afula at its centre and several archaeological sites scattered across the plain.

• Best viewpoint: A hill such as Tel Megiddo provides the clearest panoramic views across the plain and is a good place for photography and orientation.
• Best time to visit: Spring provides mild weather and green fields, while harvest seasons in late summer show the valley's agricultural activity at its busiest.

What to See #

• Tel Megiddo: An archaeological mound with layers from the Bronze and Iron Ages; excavations have revealed Canaanite and Israelite-period remains and it is part of the group of Biblical tells in the region.
• Afula: A modern market town near the centre of the valley that serves as a local transport and commercial hub for the surrounding agricultural plain.
