Jerejak Island (Pulau Jerejak) is a small island off the southeast coast of Penang Island in Malaysia. It lies close to the Bayan Lepas area and Penang International Airport.
The island contains ruins and overgrown buildings from its colonial-era use as a quarantine station and later as a penal facility, and has been partially redeveloped for low-density tourism and resort facilities. Visitors can find nature trails and remnants of historic infrastructure rather than extensive urban amenities.
Under British colonial administration the island served as a quarantine and health station and later hosted confinement facilities; its institutional uses continued through much of the 20th century. More recently parts of the island have been redeveloped for tourism while other areas remain largely undeveloped.
Pulau Jerejak is located a short ferry ride off the southeastern shore of Penang Island, near Bayan Lepas and the island’s international airport in the state of Penang.
