Jengish Chokusu, also known as Peak Pobeda or Victory Peak, is the highest mountain in the Tian Shan range and the highest point in Kyrgyzstan, reaching 7,439 metres. It is noted for extreme alpine conditions, extensive glaciers and a high objective danger due to avalanches and rockfall.
The peak is a serious expedition objective with long, remote approaches and highly technical climbing conditions on many routes; it is less frequently attempted than some other 7,000-metre peaks because of these hazards. Climbers and mountaineering teams approach via long glacier corridors and require extended acclimatisation and high logistical support.
The mountain was first climbed in the mid-20th century during Soviet-era expeditions and has since been the subject of international mountaineering attempts. Its combination of height, remoteness and unstable glaciation has made it a landmark in Central Asian alpinism.
Jengish Chokusu lies on the eastern-central spine of the Tian Shan on the Kyrgyz-China border in a very high and glaciated sector of the range.
