About Jeitun

Jeitun is a Neolithic archaeological site in the Ahal Region of Turkmenistan and is the namesake of the Jeitun culture. The site is important for understanding early farming and settled communities in Central Asia.

Archaeological remains include foundations of mud-brick houses and other features associated with early village life; the site documents domesticated crops and animals used by settled communities. It is primarily of interest to archaeologists and those studying the origins of agriculture in the region.

Excavations carried out in the mid-20th century established Jeitun as a key early Neolithic settlement, with cultural remains dating to several millennia BCE. The material record at Jeitun is central to defining a regional Neolithic sequence for southern Central Asia.

Jeitun lies in the Ahal Region of Turkmenistan, in the southern part of the country within the broader Karakum steppe area and administratively south of the capital Ashgabat.

Jeitun is in the Ahal Region of Turkmenistan near the ancient Trans-Caspian corridors. Access usually requires coordination with local authorities or tour operators; the nearest larger town is Ashgabat, from which road travel and arranged transport are necessary.
