Jeita Grotto
Amusement Park Spectacular limestone cave system with underground lakes
A karst cave complex north of Beirut with upper walkways and a lower river reached by boat. Tourists come for stalactite formations, a cable-car approach and guided tours that explain the cave’s geology and local significance.
Jeita Grotto is a karst cave system near the Nahr al-Kalb valley north of Beirut, formed in limestone and noted for extensive calcite formations. The system comprises two main interconnected levels - a dry upper gallery and a lower river cave - that together make it Lebanon’s best-known show cave.
The upper galleries offer walking routes past large stalactites and stalagmites and high vaulted chambers, while the lower galleries are experienced by boat on an underground river. The site is laid out for visitors with a cable car, paths and guided routes and is usually visited on day trips from the coast.
Local use and awareness of the caves goes back many generations; modern exploration and development transformed them into a public show cave in the 20th century. Since opening to visitors the site has been managed with staged walkways and boat access to protect the formations.
The grotto sits on the limestone hills above the coastal plain north of Beirut and is reached by road from the nearby towns along the Jounieh corridor. The car park and visitor centre are a short transfer from the cave entrances.
- Access: A short cable car ride or steep walk is used to reach the upper cave entrance from the visitor centre.
- Visitor tip: The lower cave includes a guided boat trip on an underground river; visit times can be constrained by queueing in high season.
What to See #
- Upper Grotto: A high-ceilinged limestone chamber filled with dramatic stalactite and stalagmite formations and accessible on foot via a series of walkways and steps.
- Lower Grotto: A lower passage containing an underground river that is traversed by electric boat for the visitor route; the lower level is reached separately from the upper galleries.
How to Get to Jeita Grotto #
Jeita Grotto lies north of Beirut near Jounieh. By car it is approximately 15-25 km from central Beirut (about 30-45 minutes depending on traffic); public minibuses and local taxis run to Jounieh, from where local transport or a short taxi ride will bring you up to the grotto entrance. The site has parking and a short walk/cable‑car link between the upper and lower grotto areas.
Tips for Visiting Jeita Grotto #
- Arrive early in the morning (before coach-bus arrivals) to enjoy the caves with far fewer people; late afternoons can also be quieter outside peak hours.
- Follow the visitor-centre directions: the site comprises two distinct galleries (a lower river cave with a boat section and an upper gallery with walkways), so allow time to see both rather than skipping the upper gallery's dramatic high chambers, which many visitors miss.
- Book tickets and transfers in advance during high season and check for temporary closures-Jeita is a highly managed site and availability can be limited when large tour groups or events are scheduled.
Best Time to Visit Jeita Grotto #
