Main image

The Jefferson Memorial is a neoclassical monument on the Tidal Basin in Washington, D.C., honoring Thomas Jefferson, third U.S. president and author of the Declaration of Independence. The rotunda and colonnade structure were constructed in the early 1940s and feature inscriptions of Jefferson’s writings.

Inside the memorial a prominent bronze statue of Jefferson occupies the rotunda, and exterior steps and terraces frame views across the Tidal Basin. The site is strongly associated with the city’s cherry blossom displays each spring and is a focal point for visitors during that season.

Designed by John Russell Pope, construction began in 1939 and the memorial was dedicated in 1943; since then it has functioned as both a commemorative monument and a public space for reflection and ceremonies. The memorial is maintained as a National Park Service site and is one of several presidential memorials on the Tidal Basin.

The memorial stands on the south bank of the Tidal Basin in West Potomac Park, close to the National Mall and surrounded by ornamental cherry trees that line the basin.

  • Construction and design: The memorial was built between 1939 and 1943, designed by architect John Russell Pope, and was dedicated in 1943 as a neoclassical domed monument to Thomas Jefferson.
