Main image

Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park is a California state park in the far north coast region that protects old-growth coast redwood forest along the Smith River. It was established to conserve some of the tallest and oldest redwood trees in the region.

Visitors can walk short trails through dense old-growth groves and see very large coast redwoods, including stands accessible from the park entrance. The park offers river access, shaded hiking and picnic areas amid a largely forested landscape.

The park was created in the early 20th century to protect remaining old-growth redwood stands and has since been managed as part of regional conservation efforts for coast redwoods. It sits among other state and federal protected areas that together preserve long stretches of coastal redwood habitat.

The park is on California’s north coast near Crescent City and is reached via regional highways; it lies in Del Norte County adjacent to the Smith River watershed.

  • Visitor access: Trails are generally short and well maintained, making the park accessible for viewing old-growth coast redwoods on brief visits.

What to See #

  • Stout Grove: Stout Grove, a compact, easily accessed old-growth redwood stand near the park entrance that is a popular short-walk destination for visitors.
