Jeddah Tower
Building Planned supertall skyscraper in Jeddah, intended record height
Planned on Jeddah’s Red Sea coast, Jeddah Tower was designed to exceed 1,000 meters. Construction began as a record-breaking vertical project but has been paused for several years; public access has never fully opened.
Jeddah Tower is a planned megatall skyscraper on the Red Sea coast of Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, conceived to reach or exceed 1,000 metres and become the world’s tallest building. The project was launched in the 2000s, with construction commencing in the 2010s, and has since been paused.
The design envisions mixed-use floors including hotel, office and residential components together with observation levels and supporting infrastructure. Its planned height and mixed program were intended to create a landmark vertical city-scale building on the Jeddah waterfront.
Project development involved Saudi developers and international architects, with construction activity beginning in the mid-2010s before extended suspension. The initiative reflects regional ambitions for signature tall buildings and waterfront urban development.
The site is on Jeddah’s Red Sea coast on the northern side of the city, positioned to face the coastline and supplement wider urban development along the Jeddah Corniche.
- Status and scale: Planned to exceed one kilometre in height, the project began construction in the 2010s but has experienced long pauses and is not completed.
- Design and function: Designed by Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill, intended as a mixed-use tower with hotel, offices and residences and to set a new global record for building height.
