Island Remote Arctic volcanic island administered by Norway
Jan Mayen hosts the Beerenberg volcano and a Norwegian meteorological station; access is restricted. Visitors are mainly scientists and rare expedition cruises seeking polar landscapes and volcanology.
Jan Mayen is a remote volcanic island in the Arctic Ocean administered by Norway and dominated by the snow-covered stratovolcano Beerenberg (2,277 metres). The island is uninhabited except for rotating personnel at meteorological and radio stations.
Jan Mayen’s landscape is volcanic, with glaciers descending from Beerenberg and a largely uninhabited coastline used by seabirds and marine mammals. There are no tourist infrastructure services; visits are mostly scientific, military or highly organised expedition trips.
The island has been known to European mariners since the early 17th century and is now used by Norway for meteorological observations and navigation services. It has no permanent civilian population; staffing is limited and rotational.
Jan Mayen sits in the Arctic Ocean northeast of Iceland and west of Norway’s mainland territories; it lies in a remote position between Greenland, Iceland and the Norwegian archipelagoes.
- Access: Access is restricted and infrequent; visits typically occur by chartered ship or via limited military and meteorological flights and require prior permission.
