Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge
Park Urban wildlife refuge in New York, birdwatching destination
In New York’s Queens borough, Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge protects salt marshes and migratory birds; visitors kayak, birdwatch and use trails within the Gateway National Recreation Area.
The Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge is a protected wetland complex in the borough of Queens, New York City and is part of the Gateway National Recreation Area managed by the U.S. National Park Service. It protects maritime salt marshes, shallow ponds and upland habitats that serve as an important urban wildlife sanctuary.
The refuge is a major urban birding destination with over 300 bird species recorded; visitors commonly see shorebirds, waders and migrating songbirds in spring and fall. Trails, boardwalks and observation points give access to marsh edges and ponds for wildlife viewing and photography. Recreational uses include walking, nature study and seasonal interpretive programs run by park staff and local partners.
The area that is now the refuge was long used for fishing, oyster beds and occasional grazing before federal designation placed it under the National Park Service. It was incorporated into the Gateway National Recreation Area when that unit of the NPS was created in the early 1970s and has since been managed for habitat protection and public access.
The refuge sits within Jamaica Bay on the south side of Queens, adjacent to neighborhoods such as Broad Channel and near the southern edge of New York City. It lies within the urbanized New York metropolitan area yet consists of largely undeveloped marshes and islands.
- Best time to visit: Peak bird migration occurs in spring and fall, when shorebirds and waterfowl numbers are highest; early morning is the best time for birdwatching.
- Visitor note: Managed by the U.S. National Park Service as part of Gateway National Recreation Area, the refuge has trails and observation points but limited on-site services, so bring water and binoculars.
