The Jama Masjid at Fatehpur Sikri is the main congregational mosque within the imperial city built by Mughal Emperor Akbar in the late 16th century. It is a principal structure in the Fatehpur Sikri complex and is noted for its red sandstone architecture and large prayer courtyard.
The mosque has a wide open courtyard that can hold thousands of worshippers and a prayer hall with ornate stonework, arches and domes typical of Mughal architecture. It is connected visually and spatially with the Buland Darwaza, the grand gateway that serves as the ceremonial entrance to the complex.
Built during Akbar’s establishment of Fatehpur Sikri as his capital, the mosque formed part of a planned ensemble of palaces, administrative buildings and religious structures. Over time the complex remained an important architectural example of Mughal civic and religious planning.
Fatehpur Sikri lies west of Agra in Uttar Pradesh and is a common stop on the Agra tourist circuit; the mosque sits at the heart of the walled complex and is accessible from Agra by road.
