Jaisalmer Fort is a large fortified hilltop complex in the city of Jaisalmer, Rajasthan, India, originally founded in the 12th century and renowned for its yellow sandstone construction. It stands as a dominant feature of the city in the Thar Desert and contains palaces, temples and residential quarters within its ramparts.

Prominent attractions inside the fort include the royal palace (Raj Mahal), multiple Jain temples with ornate stone carving dating from the 12th to 15th centuries, and extensive defensive walls and bastions that offer wide desert views. The fort’s sandstone takes on a golden hue in sunlight, which gives it the local name “Sonar Qila” or Golden Fort.

The fort was established in 1156 by Rawal Jaisal and developed as the political and commercial centre of the region under successive rulers; over time streets, havelis and temples were added within the fortified area. Unlike many medieval forts, Jaisalmer Fort continues to contain a resident population and functioning temples and markets.

Situated on a sandstone ridge in western Rajasthan, the fort dominates the modern city of Jaisalmer and is accessible by road from regional towns and cities in the state.

  • Founding: Founded in 1156 by the Rajput ruler Rawal Jaisal, the fort is built of yellow sandstone that gives it a golden appearance in sunlight.
  • Inhabited fort: The fort remains a living urban quarter with houses, shops and temples still occupied within the medieval walls.

Jaisalmer Fort sits in the heart of Jaisalmer old town. The fort is a short walk or rickshaw/taxi ride from Jaisalmer’s bus and railway stations-expect a 5-20 minute local transfer depending on your arrival point.

Tips for Visiting Jaisalmer Fort #

  • Visit at sunrise or late afternoon when the fort's honey‑coloured sandstone looks best and the narrow lanes inside are far less crowded than during midday.
  • Enter with no fixed plan: the fort is a living quarter with residences and shops inside the walls - slow your walk through the alleys to discover havelis, Jain temples and rooftop view points that many quick day‑visitors miss.
  • Consider staying overnight in a guesthouse inside the fort to experience the quiet early‑morning light on the ramparts and to avoid the peak flow of day-trippers; a guided walking tour will also reveal historical details you'll otherwise pass by.
