Jagdschloss Grunewald

Jagdschloss Grunewald is a 16th-century hunting lodge in the Grunewald forest on Berlin’s western edge, originally built for the Electors of Brandenburg in the 1540s. It is the oldest preserved palace in the Berlin area.

The site is valued for its preserved Renaissance architecture and compact historic interiors, with visitors typically seeing the building’s exterior, courtyard and rooms that retain period character. The lodge sits directly beside Grunewaldsee, offering lakeside views and a short walking circuit around the water.

Built for Elector Joachim II in the mid-16th century, the lodge served as a hunting and recreational residence for members of the Hohenzollern family. It has undergone repairs and alterations in later centuries but retains core Renaissance fabric and layout.

The lodge sits within the Grunewald forest in western Berlin, on a peninsula of Grunewaldsee. It is within the city limits of Berlin and reachable from central Berlin by S-Bahn and local roads.
