Jagannath Temple
Religious Site Major Hindu temple in Puri, central to Rath Yatra
Puri’s Jagannath Temple, dating to the 12th century, is a major Hindu pilgrimage site famed for the annual Rath Yatra when deities travel on giant chariots. Visitors come for ritual life, temple architecture, and the intensity of festival crowds.
The Jagannath Temple in Puri, Odisha, is a 12th-century Hindu temple complex dedicated to Lord Jagannath, a form of Vishnu. The present large stone temple was built under the Eastern Ganga dynasty and remains an active and central pilgrimage site.
The complex contains the main sanctum with three wooden deities - Jagannath, Balabhadra and Subhadra - and extensive ritual spaces used daily for worship; the temple is also famous for its annual Rath Yatra chariot festival, which occurs in June or July and attracts very large crowds. Pilgrims and visitors come to view the processions, observe rituals from designated areas and receive the temple’s Mahaprasad food offerings.
The current temple structure was constructed in the 12th century by King Anantavarman Chodaganga of the Eastern Ganga dynasty and has been an important pilgrimage and political centre since then, with periodic repairs and additions over the medieval and modern eras. The wooden idols are ritually replaced at fixed intervals, a practice with deep religious significance.
The temple stands in the coastal city of Puri on the Bay of Bengal, about 60 kilometres from Bhubaneswar, the capital of Odisha. The complex sits within the old city and is accessible by road from regional transport hubs.
- Rath Yatra: The annual Rath Yatra takes place in June or July and is one of the largest religious chariot festivals in India, drawing very large crowds to Puri.
- Access rules: Non-Hindus are generally not permitted inside the inner sanctum, though the complex can be viewed from outside and from designated areas.
