Jaffa Gate
Building Historic Jerusalem Old City gate near Tower of David
A principal gate in the Old City walls of Jerusalem, adjacent to the Tower of David and Jaffa Road; travellers use it to enter the Armenian and Christian Quarters and reach nearby markets and historic sites.
Jaffa Gate is one of the principal gates in the walls of Jerusalem’s Old City, located on the western side of the walled enclosure and historically aligned with the road to the Mediterranean port of Jaffa. The gate occupies a prominent position adjacent to the Tower of David (the Citadel).
The gate provides access into the Old City near the Armenian and Christian Quarters and opens onto a plaza and the modern approach from the Mamilla and Jaffa Road areas. The structure has served as a ceremonial and practical entrance for centuries and remains a major pedestrian and vehicular access point.
The present gate form dates to the Ottoman rebuilding of Jerusalem’s walls in the 16th century under Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent. Over centuries the gate and adjacent citadel have been modified for military and civic purposes and today form part of the conserved Old City fabric.
Jaffa Gate sits on the western ramparts of Jerusalem’s Old City, adjacent to the Tower of David museum complex and at the junction of routes leading toward modern West Jerusalem and the historic coastal road to Jaffa.
- Ottoman-era gate: Part of the Old City walls built by Ottoman Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent in the 16th century and historically served as a main western gate on the route toward Jaffa.
How to Get to Jaffa Gate #
Jaffa Gate is on the western side of Jerusalem’s Old City walls facing Jaffa Road. It’s within easy walking distance from central Jerusalem - for example about 20-30 minutes on foot (1-2 km depending on start point) from the main bus/rail interchange areas. Alternatively take city buses or the Jerusalem Light Rail to stops on Jaffa Road and walk a short distance along Jaffa Street/Yafo Street to the gate entrance.
Tips for Visiting Jaffa Gate #
- Visit very early morning or late afternoon to avoid the main cruise‑ship and organized‑tour influx that concentrates at the western gates of the Old City.
- Approach from Jaffa Road for the most direct access and combine the stop with the Tower of David complex next door to make the most of the area rather than treating the gate as a single quick photo opportunity.
- If you want quieter rampart or citadel views, enter the Old City here and head straight to the adjacent Tower of David museum or nearby ramparts rather than lingering at the busy gate plaza.
