Jacob's Well

Jacob’s Well is an ancient water source and pilgrimage site in the West Bank, traditionally identified with the biblical well where Jesus spoke with the Samaritan woman. The place has long religious significance for Christians and is also recognized in local traditions.

The well is capped by a small chapel built over the shaft and an enclosed area where visitors can view the well opening. The site receives pilgrims and tourists who come to venerate the location and see the ancient masonry and liturgical fittings.

Veneration of the site dates back to at least the Byzantine era, and the well has been incorporated into successive Christian buildings and restorations over many centuries. It remains an active devotional site and a point of inter-religious and historical interest.

Geographically Jacob’s Well lies a short distance to the south of the city of Nablus in the northern West Bank, within the vicinity of the Balata area.

• The well chamber: The open well shaft and water chamber lie beneath the chapel; the well itself has been a focus of pilgrimage and veneration for centuries and is accessible from the surface through the church floor.
• Greek Orthodox chapel: A 19th-century-era Orthodox chapel stands directly above the well and provides the enclosed space where visitors enter the site; it contains icons and liturgical furnishings associated with the site's Christian use.
