Jabal al-Tair Island
Island Remote Red Sea volcanic island with historic lighthouse
Jabal al-Tair Island in the Red Sea off Yemen’s Al-Hudaydah coast is a volcanic islet. Visits are rare and require specialized vessels; the site attracts geologists and divers interested in underwater topography.
Jabal al-Tair is a small volcanic island in the southern Red Sea, administered by Yemen. The island is formed by a volcanic cone that rises directly from the sea and is notable for its volcanic activity.
The island’s volcanic summit has produced intermittent eruptions; a major eruption in 2007 destroyed structures on the island and resulted in fatalities among those stationed there. The island is uninhabited except for temporary personnel and is primarily of interest for its volcanic geology and maritime location.
Historically the island has hosted a lighthouse and intermittent military or meteorological postings; eruptions have repeatedly affected those facilities. Control and access have at times been affected by the island’s strategic location and by periodic volcanic activity.
Geographically the island lies in the Red Sea off the coast of western Yemen, positioned on deep sea lanes between the Horn of Africa and the Arabian Peninsula.
