Izmailovo Kremlin

Building Cultural complex in Moscow styled like a kremlin

In Moscow’s eastern suburbs, the Izmailovo Kremlin is a recent cultural complex built in traditional style; visitors browse craft markets, museums, restaurants and weekend fairs.

Main image

The Izmailovo Kremlin is a cultural, commercial, and entertainment complex in the Izmaylovo area of northeast Moscow, built in the late 1990s and 2000s in a stylized neo-Russian architectural idiom. It is not a medieval fortress but a modern compound designed to evoke traditional Russian architecture and crafts.

The complex houses multiple small museums, exhibition halls, craft workshops and a large open-air and indoor craft market known as a vernisazh, where visitors can buy traditional handicrafts and souvenirs. It also contains event spaces and a purpose-built wedding palace used for ceremonies and cultural events.

Constructed as a tourist and cultural destination, the site combines brightly colored timber-and-stone buildings, towers and decorative details to create a compact ensemble that references historic Russian architecture. It stands in the Izmaylovo district close to Izmaylovsky Park and is a notable local centre for folk art and craft trade.

  • Modern reconstruction style: Built from the late 1990s as a cultural and entertainment complex in a neo-Russian architectural style rather than a historical Kremlin.
  • Accessible location: Located in the Izmaylovo district of northeast Moscow, it is easily reached from central Moscow by metro and public transport.
