Izborsk

Izborsk is a historic village and fortress complex in Pskov Oblast, Russia, notable as one of the region’s oldest fortified sites and a well-known medieval stronghold. The fortress is set on a rocky outcrop and has been preserved and partly reconstructed for visitors.

The main attraction is the hilltop fortress with its stone walls and towers, which visitors can walk around to view the defensive works and the surrounding countryside. Interpretive displays and excavated remains around the site illustrate its medieval defensive role and settlement history.

Izborsk was a strategic frontier fortress in the medieval period and featured in regional conflicts between the Pskov principality and neighboring powers; much of the extant fortress architecture dates from medieval rebuilding and later restorations. The site has long historical significance in northwest Russia.

The settlement and fortress lie in Pskov Oblast in northwestern Russia, close to the border with Estonia and within the historic Pskov region.
