Izapa is an archaeological site on the Pacific coastal foothills of Chiapas, Mexico, near the Guatemala border, noted for its extensive carved monuments and platform-mound architecture. It is an important site for understanding Formative-period developments in southern Mesoamerica.
The site features a central plaza area with earthen mounds and a dispersed field of carved stelae and altars displaying complex relief imagery. Walkways and onsite panels allow visitors to move among the principal mounds and stelae groups and view the sculpted stones in situ.
Izapa was a long-occupied settlement in the southern Mesoamerican lowlands whose inhabitants produced a distinctive corpus of carved monuments and constructed substantial platform mounds and plazas. The site played a role in regional interaction across the Formative and into later periods.
Izapa lies in the Soconusco region of Chiapas near the Pacific coast and the Guatemala border, approximately 10-20 km northwest of Tapachula and close to the coastal plain.
