Ivvavik National Park
National Park Remote Yukon park protecting Arctic wildlife and tundra
Ivvavik National Park in Yukon protects tundra, folded mountains and the Firth River; visitors come for remote rafting, sightings of migrating caribou and fly‑in backcountry camping.
Ivvavik National Park is a protected Arctic park in northern Yukon, Canada, created through an agreement with the Inuvialuit to conserve coastal tundra, river valleys and mountain landscapes. The park covers a very large, roadless area and conserves habitat for migratory wildlife and traditional Inuvialuit land use.
Key features include the unregulated Firth River corridor, glacially influenced terrain and coastal plains that support migratory herds and a range of Arctic species such as muskox and migrating caribou. Activities are primarily wilderness-oriented - river trips, wildlife viewing and remote camping - and require planning and charter access.
Ivvavik was established in 1992 under the Inuvialuit Final Agreement and is managed to protect both ecological values and Inuvialuit rights; its Inuvialuktun name means “birthplace”. The park is remote with no road access; visitors normally arrive by chartered aircraft from communities in the western Arctic.
Geographically the park lies in the northern Yukon along the Beaufort Sea and inland river valleys; the nearest regional centres for access are Inuvik and other Arctic communities from which charter flights or river trips begin.
- Area and establishment: Established as a national park in 1992 following land-claim agreements with the Inuvialuit, protecting roughly 10,170 square kilometres of Arctic wilderness.
- Firth River: The Firth River is a major wilderness river within the park, known for multi-day rafting and canoeing on an unregulated Arctic river system.
