Iturup
Island Largest Kuril Island, volcanically active and Russia-controlled
Iturup, a Kuril Island administered by Russia, combines volcanic peaks, hot springs and rugged coastline; travellers come for fishing, seabird colonies and guided mountain hikes.
Iturup (Japanese name Etorofu) is one of the southern Kuril Islands in the northwest Pacific, administered by Russia as part of Sakhalin Oblast. The island is volcanic and mountainous, with a small, dispersed population concentrated in settlements such as Kurilsk.
Natural attractions include rugged coastlines, volcanic peaks and crater landscapes, while human settlement is limited and infrastructure is modest. The island’s climate and remoteness mean access is by infrequent ferry or scheduled flights, often subject to seasonal conditions.
Control of Iturup changed in the modern era following World War II and remains part of a broader territorial dispute between Russia and Japan. The island’s history includes indigenous Ainu presence and periods of Japanese and Russian administration.
Iturup lies in the Kuril chain between Japan’s Hokkaido and Russia’s Kamchatka region in the northwest Pacific Ocean.
- Sovereignty dispute: Iturup is administered by Russia's Sakhalin Oblast but is one of the Kuril Islands subject to a territorial dispute with Japan (which calls the island Etorofu).
- Access and terrain: The island is sparsely populated and dominated by rugged volcanic terrain, with limited transport links and seasonal weather constraints for visitors.
What to See #
- Kurilsk: Kurilsk, the island's main settlement, serves as the local administrative and service centre for residents.
- Volcanic terrain and peaks: Volcanic highlands and crater zones that form the island's backbone and include multiple volcanic peaks and geothermal features.
Tips for Visiting Iturup #
- Iturup is in a Russian border and disputed‑territory area: foreign visitors usually need special permits and must comply with Russian border‑zone regulations-secure permissions well before travel.
- Travel to the Kurils is typically arranged through licensed tour operators or regional authorities (often from Yuzhno‑Sakhalinsk); independent travel is logistically difficult because services, fuel and accommodation are limited.
- Plan logistics through an experienced operator for access to volcanic sites, hot springs and landing points, and confirm which areas are open to visitors since parts of the island may be restricted for military or administrative reasons.
Best Time to Visit Iturup #
Iturup is best visited in summer (June-August) when conditions are mildest and access is easiest.
