Ithome is a prominent hill and archaeological site in Messenia in the southwestern Peloponnese, Greece, known since antiquity as a fortified stronghold of the Messenians. The site sits directly above the ruins of Ancient Messene and remains an important local landmark.
The summit area preserves traces of ancient fortification and scattered ruins that afford broad views over the Messenian plain. The position offers visual context for the nearby excavated city of Ancient Messene and is often visited together with that site.
Ithome functioned in antiquity as a fortified citadel and rallying point for the Messenians during their conflicts with Sparta; its importance is reflected in classical sources describing Messenian resistance. Over the centuries the hill saw reuse in later Hellenistic and medieval periods, and today archaeological work has focused on mapping the fortifications and associated remains.
The hill rises immediately above the archaeological site of Ancient Messene in Messenia, on the western side of the Peloponnese. It occupies a dominant position over the Messenian plain and is approached from the modern roads serving the Messene complex.
